AAR has signed its first power-by-the-hour (PBH) contract in Asia with Japanese carrier Ibex Airlines in support of its Bombardier CRJ family aircraft.

Under the terms of the agreement, AAR will manage the supply chain from its CRJ components inventory through its global warehouse network, including the management of the component repair cycle at a fixed price.

Tokyo-based Ibrex will also have access to AAR’s inventory pool through exchanges and procurement.

The programme will initially cover two CRJ200 aircraft before expanding to nine in the coming months with the inclusion of seven CRJ700 aircraft.

Ken Hein, AAR’s senior vice-president of supply chain, said: “Given the rapid growth of Asia’s aviation market, PBH programmes allow airlines to outsource capital costs and parts management so they can focus on operations and passengers.”

Safran has opened a new 10,000m² facility in Querétaro, Mexico dedicated to the repair of CFM56 engine components.

The centre will operate as Snecma America Engine Service and becomes Safran’s tenth Mexican facility.

The firm said the facility will provide repairs for engine parts which were previously replaced while helping it maintain competitiveness in the component repair segment.

Paris-headquartered Safran also confirmed it plans to use Mexico as the location for a third composites plant alongside material specialist Albany, citing demand for the forthcoming LEAP engine and the rise in 737 MAX production.

The plant will start producing 3D composite fan blades from Q4 2017 with a targeted production rate of more than 20,000 blades annually by 2021.

North American MRO Flying Colours has completed the expansion of its Canadian headquarters in Peterborough, Ontario which includes increasing its technical workshop space.

The firm said it has added a further 600m² of space to increase workflow capacity resulting from a rise in customer demand for refurbishment and completion projects.

It said the expanded site will provide room to house two new downdraft tables as well as a new down draft spray booth.

Sean Gillespie, executive vice-president of Flying Colours, said: “The increased demand for work on larger type aircraft and our Global ASF status means we need to match customer expectation in terms of their experience when visiting us.”
